Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French quillon.
Etymology: < French quillon (1570 in Middle French), literally ‘little ninepin’ (so called from the shape of the piece, which resembles that of a ninepin) < quille ninepin (see kayles n.) + -on -oon suffix.
Chiefly historical.
Either of the two arms forming the cross-guard of a sword or dagger; usually in plural. Also: = cross-guard n. at cross- comb. form 2.

1970 F. Wilkinson Edged Weapons v. 71 During the 16th Century the quillon dagger continued to be popular, although the hilt no longer resembled that of the contemporary sword.
2003 UK Newsquest Regional Press (London) (Nexis) 1 Oct. The Museum..has confirmed it is a straight quillon dagger of the late 15th or early 16th Century.
