Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Italian. Etymons: French marron; Italian marrone.
Etymology: < Middle French marron (1533) or Italian marrone (16th–17th cent.), both < ultimately post-classical Latin Marrones, Marones, the name of an Alpine people (10th cent.), of uncertain origin.Probably unconnected with post-classical Latin Maro type of a guide (a1142 in a British source) < the name of Publius Vergilius Maro (see Maronist n.1; compare also the role of Virgil as guide in Dante's Inferno and Purgatorio (early 14th cent.)).
Obsolete.
A mountain guide, esp. in the Alps.
