Etymology: < Middle French Massoreth (1546 in sense 1 (1532 in form Massoret ) in Rabelais), 1581 in sense 2 in the source translated in quot. 1587¹ at sense 2 < Hebrew māsōreṯ bond (Ezekiel 20:37; in post-biblical Hebrew ‘Masorah’, after māsar to deliver, hand down) < 'āsar to bind.Sense 2 seems to have arisen by a misunderstanding, apparently in French.
