Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from German. Etymons: French mélodium; German Melodium.
Etymology: In sense 1 < French mélodium (1844 in the phrase orgue mélodium ) < mélodie melody n. + -ium , after harmonium harmonium n. In sense 2 < German Melodium (a1940), probably a specific application of the French word.The French phrase orgue mélodium was coined by J. Alexandre, to whom the rights to make instruments of the harmonium type were sold in 1844 by F. Debain, the inventor of the original harmonium, on condition that the name harmonium was not used.
Music. Now historical.
