Origin: A borrowing from Sanskrit. Etymon: Sanskrit marma.
Etymology: < Sanskrit marma, nominative singular of marman vulnerable point, vital point, popularly connected with mṛ to die.
In alternative medicine: any of a number of sensitive points in the body through which energy is believed to flow, and which are believed to govern particular mental or physical functions; the practice of massaging such points for therapeutic effect. Frequently attributive in marma massage, marma point.It is not the case, as quots. 1988 and 1995 suggest, that massage of this kind forms part of traditional Ayurvedic medicine. In Ayurvedic medicine the marman is a point where life is strongly present, which pulsates irregularly and hurts when pressed; it should neither be touched nor massaged. There is no concept of energy flow in Ayurvedic medicine.
