Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin materia medica.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin materia medica (1557 in the title of a translation of Dioscorides by J. Cornarius; that of M. Vergilius (1518) has medica materia ) < classical Latin māteria matter n.1 + medica , feminine singular of medicus medical adj., after Hellenistic Greek ὕλη ἰατρική medical material (title of a work by Dioscorides).Compare also post-classical Latin materia medicinalis (6th cent.; compare medicinalis materia, 1516 in the title of a translation of Dioscorides by H. Barbarus); French matière médicinale (1748), matière médicale (1717).
