Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Mater dolorosa.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Mater dolorosa (especially, and perhaps originally, in the verses Stabat mater dolorosa Iuxta crucem lacrimosa ’The mother, full of grief and tearful, stood next to the cross’: see Stabat Mater n.) < mater mother n.1 + dolorosa , feminine of dolorosus dolorous adj.
The Virgin Mary regarded in her role as a mother sorrowing for the death of Jesus; a representation of this in art or sculpture. Hence also: a woman likened to the sorrowful Virgin in expression, manner, or bearing.
