Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian marzacotto.

Etymology: < Italian marzacotto glaze or frit used in ceramics (a1311; c1302 as mazzacotto), probably (with influence of cotto cooked) < Arabic masḥaqūniyā liquid glass, molten glass foam (perhaps via a post-classical Latin text in which the Arabic letter n was rendered as the similar-looking letter t). Compare post-classical Latin massa cocta (Mateo Silvatico, Pandectae Medicinae (late 13th cent.) ‘massacuma, materia quaedam qua vitrum fit, et vocatur vulgo massa cocta’).Florio (1598) glosses marzacotto as ‘an instrument or toole that potters use’, but he also has mazzacotto ‘a kinde of stuffe whereof glasse is made’.
