Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish marinera.
Etymology: < American Spanish marinera type of Andean folk dance, use as noun (probably short for cueca marinera ) of feminine singular of marinero marine, seafaring (for the corresponding noun see mariner n.): compare quot. 1964.
A lively South American dance derived from the cueca, performed by couples waving handkerchiefs; music to accompany this.
