Etymology: < Anglo-Norman marinel, marinal, marinail, Middle French marinel sailor (mid 12th cent. in Old French) < Anglo-Norman and Old French marin , marine marine n. + -el , -al -al suffix1. Compare post-classical Latin marinellus, (rare) marinallus sailor (12th cent., from 1203 in British sources). N.E.D. (1905) enters this under marinal and indicates the stress as maˈrinal : the metre of quot. a1400 instead suggests stress on the first syllable.
Chiefly Scottish and English regional (northern). Obsolete.
A mariner, a sailor.
