Etymology: < marine adj. + -age suffix, perhaps after Anglo-Norman marinage or post-classical Latin marinagium (15th cent. in a British source). Compare also Old French marinage (adjective) situated beside the sea (c1190), (noun) sailor (1312), sea voyage (late 16th cent.), Middle French marinaige navigation (1515); Spanish †marinage seamanship (1786 or earlier; now marinaje).
