Etymology: < American Spanish marielito < Mariel , the name of a Cuban port + -ito -et suffix1 (see quot. 1980).

Any of the tens of thousands of Cuban refugees who sailed from Mariel to Florida in 1980 as a result of a temporary relaxation of emigration restrictions by the Cuban government.A number of those permitted to leave Cuba were inmates of prisons or mental institutions. The adverse publicity occasioned by this has led to the term sometimes being used pejoratively.
