Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French martyrie; Latin martyrium.
Etymology: < (i) Old French, Middle French, French martyrie (1080 in sense 1, 1599 in sense 2), or its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin martyrium martyre n. Compare Italian martirio (11th–12th cent.), Spanish martirio (1220–50), Portuguese martírio (16th cent.).
