Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Marginella.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Marginella, genus name (Lamarck 1799, in Mém. de la Soc. d'Hist. Nat. 70), probably < classical Latin margin- , margō margin n. + -ella -ella suffix. Compare French marginelle (1801, Lamarck).

A genus of marine gastropod molluscs; (also marginella) a mollusc of this genus or of the family Marginellidae; the shell of any of these molluscs, usually glossy with a small or flattened spire and a thickened outer lip.
