Etymology: Representing a Scots pronunciation of ah well at well adv. 20b(a) (compare the variants at well adv.).

Used to introduce a remark or statement, now esp. so as to express acceptance or resignation of a state of affairs already indicated (cf. ah well at well adv. 20b(a)).Aweel functions as a discourse marker with the same range of roles as well; see the note at well adv. 20 for a fuller explanation.
