XI. 834/2 Manière criblée. Probably the oldest process of engraving upon metal for the purpose of printing. It derives its name from the white dots with which the dark ground of the print is covered, resembling the holes of a sieve. 1960 H. Hayward Connoisseur's Handbk. Antique Collecting 174/1 Manière criblée, the name is derived from a group of dots made on the plate with a punch to break up otherwise black areas of background. Prints of this type were made in the late 15th and early 16th cent., especially in Florence. 1965 C. Zigrosser & C. M. Gaehde Guide to Collecting Orig.
