Etymology: < man n.1 + orchis n. In both senses so named on account of the shape of lips of the flower.
1. The man orchid, Orchis anthropophora. Also (British regional): the twayblade, Listera ovata. Cf. green man orchis n.

1955 G. Grigson Englishman's Flora 423 Listera ovata is as good a ‘man plant’ as the proper Man Orchis, Aceras anthropophorum.
1957 Encycl. Brit. XVI. 849/2 British Orchids... Among these are..Aceras (man orchis), [etc.].
2. A purple-flowered, chalk-loving British orchid of the genus Orchis, probably the aggregate of the military orchid ( O. militaris) and monkey orchid ( O. simia). Obsolete.

a1824 B. Holdich Ess. Weeds Agric. (1825) 65 Man-orchis, Red-lead, and Frogwort, are the only English names we have heard given to these weeds in damp pastures.
