Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French matte, mat.
Etymology: < French matte (1627 in this sense; 15th cent. in Middle French in sense ‘curds’), use as noun of feminine of mat matt adj.
Metallurgy.
A molten mixture of impure metal sulphides or oxides produced during the smelting of certain ores of copper, nickel, etc.

Origin: Of uncertain origin.
Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps a use of mat n.3 (compare I. Konigsberg Compl. Film Dict. (1988) 206/1 ‘Mattes were often a piece of glass with part of its area blackened’). The form matte appears French (compare note s.v. matt adj.), but no such use in French is recorded. Compare earlier matte v.

A mask used to obscure or shade an image, or part of an image; esp. such a mask used to obscure the background of a scene so that a different background may be substituted. See mask n.3 8b.
