Forms: 1800s mat-cha, 1900s– macha, 1900s– maccha, 1900s– matcha.
Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymon: Japanese matcha.
Etymology: < Japanese matcha (1454 or earlier; 1603 as maccha in Vocabulario da Lingoa de Iapam) < mat- , combining form of matsu to rub, daub ( < Middle Chinese) + cha tea ( < Middle Chinese; compare Chinese chá : see cha n. and compare tea n.1).The English forms reflect different conventions for transliterating Japanese.
Powdered green tea leaves which are added to hot water to make tea or used as a flavouring in desserts. Also: tea made with this.
