Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin manus Christi.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin manus Christi sugar prepared in a lump, especially as used in medicine (1334), a medicinal syrup (14th cent.) < classical Latin manus hand (see manus n.1) + Christī , genitive singular of Christus Christ n. and int. Compare Old Occitan manus Christi (a1368), Middle French manu christi (1372), manus Christi (a1406), and Italian manicristo (a1487) all denoting a confection made from sugar and spices, or a kind of spice-bread.The name probably originally referred to the supposed pharmaceutical efficacy of sugar. Compare also:1807 R. Morris & J. Kendrick Edinb. Med. & Physical Dict. II. (Gloss. obs. terms) Manus Dei, an epithet for opium; and a name for a resolvent plaister described by Lemery.

A kind of restorative confection or cordial drink (see quot. 1706).
