Origin: Perhaps formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: English *mam- , -le suffix 3.
Etymology: Perhaps < a base *mam-, of imitative origin + -le suffix 3, with epenthetic b in the later regional form: compare Old High German lefsmammalōn to stammer, German mammeln to murmur, mämmeln to sip, memmeln (in the regional usage of Bavaria and Austria) to chew the cud or move the lips as if doing so, or murmur. Compare also mammer v., mumble v., mammock n. N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (mæ·mb'l) /ˈmæmb(ə)l/.
