Origin: A borrowing from Malay. Etymon: Malay mamak.
Etymology: < Malay mamak maternal uncle, elder brother < Tamil māmā maternal uncle.Malay does not have final long , so the -k (pronounced as a glottal stop in this position) may have been added to help to approximate the final long vowel of the Tamil etymon.
