Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish mamar gallo.
Etymology: < South American Spanish mamar gallo to tease, to mock (apparently originally with reference to the birds used in cockfighting) (1937 or earlier; also with definite article mamar el gallo (1912 or earlier)) < mamar to suck, to suckle (13th cent.; < classical Latin mammāre < mamma breast: see mamma n.) + gallo cockerel, rooster (see gayelle n.).Earlier currency of the South American Spanish verb phrase is implied by mamador de gallo person who teases (1893 or earlier). In the form mamaguile apparently showing folk-etymological alteration of the final syllable after guile v.
