Origin: A borrowing from Portuguese. Etymon: Portuguese maracá.
Etymology: < Portuguese maracá (1587) < Tupi mbara'ká , maráka < marâ tumult, noise + akâ chief, or < Guarani mbaracá . Compare Middle French, French maraca (1578). In quot. 1598 at sense 1 translating Dutch maraca (1596).
1. A Latin American percussion instrument made from a hollow gourd or gourd-shaped container filled with dried beans, etc., and played, usually in pairs, by being shaken. Usually in plural (except in attributive use).
