单词 mar-fire
释义

mar-firen.

Brit. /ˈmɑːfʌɪə/, U.S. /ˈmɑrˌfaɪ(ə)r/
Forms: 1800s– mar-fire, 1800s– merefire, 1800s– mer-fire.
Origin: Formed within Eglish, by comopounding; modelled on a lexical item in a Scandinavian language. Etymons: English mar- , fire n.
Etymology: < mar-, after the first element of mareel n. or one of its North Germanic cognates (see discussion at that entry) + fire n., translating the second element of the North Germanic word (see mareel n.).Explanation of the compound as < mere n.1 + fire n. and int. (‘sea-fire’) is not supported by evidence either in Old English or later, although association with mere n.1 has clearly influenced the form history. Recorded in Eng. Dial. Dict. s.v. Mer-fire n. from Northumberland and the Isle of Man.
British regional.
Phosphorescence on the sea. Cf. mareel n.
