Etymology: < German Manganin (earliest recorded 1894, H. M. Goodwin in Zeitschr. f. physikalische Chemie 13 590) < Mangan (see mangan- comb. form) + -in -in suffix¹.An alloy of copper, nickel, and manganese was discovered by E. Weston in 1892, but it received the name Manganin only when subsequently studied further by German scientists: see further D. O. Woodbury Measure for Greatness (1949) iv. 178.
