Origin: Partly a borrowing from Urdu. Partly a borrowing from Persian. Etymons: Urdu malik; Persian malik.
Etymology: < Urdu malik and its etymon Persian malik king, petty ruler, chief, headman < Arabic malik < malaka to possess, rule. In Italian by the late 16th cent., perhaps directly < Arabic. Compare French malik (1863). Compare Mameluke n.
In parts of South and Central Asia and the Middle East: the chief or headman of a village or other community.
