Etymology: < Old French atendement waiting, expectation, < atendre to attend v.: see -ment suffix. But in sense 1 probably for entendement , which in early use embraced the sense of attendement also: compare attend v. IV., and attent n.
Obsolete. rare.
1. Sense, meaning. (Cf. double entendre n.)
