Later chiefly North American: designating the principal physician, surgeon, etc., supervising the care of a particular patient or group of patients in a hospital; (also in a teaching hospital) a senior staff physician, surgeon, etc., with responsibility for the supervision of residents and interns. Cf. attending n. Additions.
