Etymology: < the name of Gjergj Kastrioti (1403–68), Albanian nobleman, known in English as Scanderbeg (compare post-classical Latin Scanderbegus , Italian Scanderbeg , Scanderbego , Albanian Skënderbeu ; all ultimately < Ottoman Turkish Iskander beg < Iskander Alexander (in allusion to Alexander the Great: see Alexandrian adj.3; compare lek n.) + beg beg n.1), who led a successful revolt against the Turks, 1443–68, and who was renowned for his daring military strategy. Compare slightly earlier Scanderbegging adj.
Obsolete.
A person resembling Scanderbeg, esp. a type of someone daring and roguish. Also contemptuous: a rascal.
