Origin: Either (i) a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Or (ii) a borrowing from French. Etymons: misfeasance n.; French mesfaisance.
Etymology: < misfeasance n. or its etymon Anglo-Norman mesfaisance wrongdoing, with substitution of mal- prefix for mis- prefix1, probably after malfeasor n. Compare French malfaisance (1738), of which 19th-cent. examples at sense 2 may show independent borrowing.
1. Law. Evildoing, illegal action; an unlawful act; spec. official misconduct by a public servant.
