Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish maravedí.
Etymology: < Spanish maravedí (1203; 1127 in form morabetins ) < Arabic murābiṭī , adjective < (al-)Murābiṭūn (the) Almoravids, North African Berber rulers of Muslim Spain from the late 11th cent. to 1145 (see Almoravid n. and adj.), plural of murābiṭ (see marabout n.). Compare Portuguese maravedi (1339; 1174 in form maravedil), Middle French, French maravédis (1515; early 15th cent. in form marvesins; late 15th cent. in form malavedis), post-classical Latin marabotinus (from 12th cent. in British sources, also in numerous spelling variants), maravidus, marvedus, marvidus (1523 in a British source).
Now historical.
1. Any of a number of medieval Spanish silver coins, distinguished by a 5.5 gram denomination based on an Almoravid silver coinage; (hence) a former Spanish money of account derived from this, used in the 13th–15th centuries to value silver and base silver coins and in the 15–18th centuries to value copper coins; a Spanish copper coin of small value (denominated as 1 maravedi) used in the 17th and 18th centuries. Frequently used as the type of a worthless or valueless object.Quot. a1625 was dated ?1430 in N.E.D., based on Purchas's claim to have copied the text from a Cotton MS by an author ‘likely to haue beene about two hundred yeares since’; however, no such MS has been identified.
