Origin: Probably of multiple origins. Probably partly a borrowing from French. Probably partly a borrowing from Latin. Probably partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: French malagme; Latin malagma; Greek μάλαγμα.
Etymology: Probably partly < (i) Middle French malagme (1537 in passage translated in quot. ?1541), partly < its etymon (ii) classical Latin malagma emollient, poultice (frequently in ancient, medieval, and early modern medical writings), and partly < the latter's etymon (iii) Hellenistic Greek μάλαγμα emollient, padding < the stem of ancient Greek μαλάσσειν to soften (see malactic adj.). Compare amalgam n.
Medicine. Obsolete.
An emollient poultice or medication, esp. an ointment.
