Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French malactique; Latin malacticus.
Etymology: < (i) Middle French malactique (1537), and its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin malacticus (5th cent.) < ancient Greek μαλακτικός emollient < the stem of μαλάσσειν to soften ( < μαλακός soft: see malaco- comb. form) + -τικός , suffix forming adjectives from verbs. In quot. 1657 at sense B. translating post-classical Latin malacticum, noun.
