†1. A body of irregular Algerian horsemen in the service of France. Obsolete.Extended from Algerian use, whereby certain military tribes were used by the central government to collect land taxes, etc. The following senses are recorded from Algerian sources dating from 1847–54: ‘Aujourd'hui [al-makhzan] signifie les cavaliers du gouvernement.., officiers et cavaliers choisis pour la rentrée des impôts,..soldats irréguliers’ (R. Dozy Suppl. aux Dicts. Arabes (1881)).
