Origin: Of uncertain origin. Probably a variant or alteration of another lexical item; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Etymon: mealy adj.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Probably variant of mealy adj. (in the corresponding sense also earliest in Markham: see sense 1 s.v., and compare regional forms s.v. meal n.1), although perhaps after Anglo-Norman maillé spotted, Middle French, French maillé (1376 in sense ‘spotted’, used chiefly of birds: see mailed adj.).
Obsolete. rare.
Perhaps: (of a horse's colouring) marked or spotted in some way.
