Etymology: Of unknown origin, although compare Old French magari , margari admiral, also renegade, probably < Byzantine Greek μαγαρίτης renegade. It has also been suggested that the word might be < Hungarian magyar Magyar n. and adj. (otherwise not occurring in English until the late 18th cent.), referring to the eastern European origin (e.g. Ragusan: compare argosy n.) of such ships.The word apparently does not occur in the Italian of Ariosto.

Obsolete. rare.
