Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Malacca.
Etymology: < Malacca (Malay Melaka, now the usual form of the place name), the name of a port (formerly a major centre of trade and a powerful autonomous city-state) on the west coast of the Malay peninsula in the south-east of Asia, and of the strait on which it is situated.
