单词 malabathrum
释义

malabathrumn.

Brit. /maləˈbaθrəm/, U.S. /mæləˈbæθrəm/
Forms: 1500s– malabathrum, 1600s malabathum (probably transmission error), 1600s– malobathrum, 1800s malabathron; also malobathron.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin mālobathrum.
Etymology: < classical Latin mālobathrum (in post-classical Latin also malabathrum , 4th cent.) < Hellenistic Greek μαλόβαθρον , μαλάβαθρον < Sanskrit tamālapattram cinnamon leaf (with ta- probably taken as the ancient Greek definite article τὸ ) < tamāla the name of various trees (the sense is probably ‘dark-coloured’; < tamas darkness, cognate with classical Latin temere blindly: see temerity n.) + pattra leaf, feather, cognate with feather n. Compare Middle French malobathrum the oil prepared from this plant (1562), the leaf of this plant (1572 in form malabatrum; French malabathrum, malobathre).Sanskrit tamāla is applied to the tree Garcinia pictoria and to various species of Cinnamomum, especially C. tamala and C. malabatrum. A former identification of malabathrum with the betel leaf (Sanskrit tāmbūla, Hindi tambōl) was mistaken (see H. Yule and A. C. Burnell Hobson-Jobson (1886) at cited word).
Now historical.
The aromatic leaf of a South Asian plant (probably any of several Indian trees of the genus Cinnamomum (family Lauraceae), esp. C. tamala), which was prized by the ancient Greeks and Romans as the source of a fragrant oil; the oil prepared from this leaf. Also: the dried leaves of these or related trees, formerly used in European medicine (also called Indian or Malabar leaf).
