单词 major-domo
释义

major-domon.

(in senses 1 and 4)Brit. /ˌmeɪdʒəˈdəʊməʊ/, U.S. /ˌmeɪdʒərˈdoʊmoʊ/ (in sense 3)Brit. /ˌmɛːˈdəʊməʊ/, /ˌmeɪəˈdəʊməʊ/, U.S. /ˌmeɪərˈdoʊmoʊ/
Forms: 1500s maiordome, 1500s mayordome, 1500s–1600s maiordomo, 1600s major-dome, 1600s mayordom, 1600s– major-domo, 1600s– major domo, 1600s– mayordomo, 1700s– majordomo.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Spanish. Partly a borrowing from Italian. Etymons: Spanish mayordomo; Italian maggiordomo.
Etymology: < Spanish mayordomo (c1120) and Italian maggiordomo (13th cent.) chief official of a great household < post-classical Latin maior domus steward, servant in charge of household (late 4th cent.) < classical Latin maior principal (see major adj. and n.1) + domūs , genitive singular of domus household, house (see dome n.). Compare Catalan majordom (13th cent.), Old Occitan majordome (14th cent.); Middle French majeur-dome (1596; earlier maiour dosme in sense ‘officer on a galley’ (1515); French majordome) is < Italian. The title became specifically associated with princely households in the 6th cent: Cassiodorus refers to the maiores domus regiae , a class of young Goths of noble families who held important positions at the court of the Ostrogoths (compare his use of maiores natu for ‘nobles’). It was given to the highest official of the Merovingian royal household: see Mayor of the Palace n. at mayor n. 4. Since it is recorded separately with reference to Vandals, Ostrogoths, Lombards, and Franks, it may perhaps in this use render a Germanic expression.
1. The chief official of an Italian or Spanish princely household. Subsequently also (in accordance with later Italian and Spanish use): the head servant of a wealthy household in a foreign country; a house-steward, a butler.
