Origin: Of uncertain origin.
Etymology: Origin uncertain; compare Gullah Majo , a personal name (see quot. a1726; still in use). Probably ultimately of West African origin; perhaps compare Ga ṇmãtšu herb used by a fetish priest.Mende májó ‘leading official of Sande’ has also been suggested as the etymon but this is unlikely.
A West Indian shrub, Picramnia antidesma (family Simaroubaceae); (also) a medicinal preparation of the bark of this plant, formerly used to treat fevers, venereal diseases, and colic (more fully majo bitters). Also called macary bitter.

Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish majo.
Etymology: < Spanish majo inhabitant of one of the working-class areas of Madrid (early 18th cent., now historical; > French majo (1775)), of uncertain origin. Compare maja n.2
Now historical.
In Spain and Spanish-speaking countries: a man who dresses gaily, a dandy; an ostentatious young man; (originally) one from a lower social class (obsolete).
