Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Madura.
Etymology: < Madura (now Madurai ), the name of a city and region in southern India where the disease was first reported (see note at sense 1). N.E.D. (1904) gives only the pronunciation (ma·dură) /ˈmadʊrə/.
Pathology.
1. Madura foot n. maduromycosis of the foot, mycetoma of the foot.No publication of 1848 by Colebrook (cf. quot. 1861) has been located.

By this time the endemic character of the affection was known, the term ‘Madura foot’ being commonly used in that district. Colebrook..states this.

1911 Encycl. Brit. XX. 785/2 Mycetoma, the Madura foot of India, is a disease very similar to actinomycosis.
