Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin madarosis.

Etymology: < post-classical Latin madarosis (1679 in the passage translated in quot. 1684) < Hellenistic Greek μαδάρωσις loss of hair, especially from the eyelids < ancient Greek μαδαρός wet, also (in Hellenistic Greek) bald ( < μαδᾶν to be bald, (of hair) to fall out, also (in Hellenistic Greek) to be moist, ultimately cognate with classical Latin madēre : see madid adj.) + -ωσις -osis suffix. Compare French madarose (1867 in Littré).

Medicine.

Loss of hair from the head, now esp. that of the eyebrows and eyelashes.
