Origin: Of multiple origins. From proper names. Etymons: proper names Māia, Greek Μαῖα.
Etymology: Partly < (i) classical Latin Māia, the name of an ancient Roman deity who came to be identified with the Greek goddess Maia (see May n.2), and partly < ancient Greek Μαῖα (see below; < μαῖα (foster) mother, midwife, hypocoristic formation on the base of μάτηρ : see mother n.1).With Maia's son compare ancient Greek ὁ Μαίας παῖς, classical Latin filius Maiae.
Classical Mythology.
One of the Pleiades (usually considered to be the eldest), who was loved by Zeus and bore his son Hermes.In Roman mythology, Maia came to be identified with Maia Majesta, a goddess of fertility and of the spring, who is said to have given her name to the month of May. Maia's son n. chiefly poetic Hermes (Mercury).
