Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Macrura , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Macrura, (former) suborder name (P. A. Latreille Buffon's Hist. Nat.: Crustacés et insectes (1802) III. 29; earlier used as the name of a genus of fishes by M. E. Bloch, and as adjective macrourus as a specific name by Linnaeus; < macro- macro- comb. form + ancient Greek οὐρά tail: see uro- comb. form2) + -ous suffix. Compare Hellenistic Greek μακρόουρος long-tailed (one isolated attestation), French macroure (1802 in Latreille as (plural) noun, 1805 as adjective).
Zoology.
Originally: belonging to the suborder Macrura of decapod crustaceans, comprising those with a relatively long abdomen (often called the tail), and including lobsters, crayfishes, shrimps, and prawns (now historical). Now: designating or relating to decapod crustaceans having this body structure.The suborder Macrura is no longer regarded as a taxonomic group; its members are currently distributed between the suborder Dendrobranchiata and various infraorders of the suborder Pleocyemata.
