Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: macro- comb. form, spore n.
Etymology: < macro- comb. form + spore n. Compare French macrospore (1842). Compare megaspore n., and microspore n.
1. Botany and Mycology. The larger of the two types of spore produced by a heterosporous plant (now usually called megaspore); (also) the larger of the two types of spore produced by some fungi.
