Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian maiolica.
Etymology: Reborrowing of Italian maiolica majolica n., at first (and still sometimes) simply as a variant of majolica n., subsequently frequently (especially in British use) used contrastively with the spelling majolica for majolica n. 3 (see further note at that entry).For 16th-cent. forms in -i- see s.v. majolica n. and adj.
