Origin: Perhaps of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Xhosa. Perhaps partly a borrowing from Afrikaans. Etymons: Xhosa amahemu; Afrikaans mahem.
Etymology: < Xhosa amahemu crowned cranes < ama-, plural prefix + ihemu crowned crane, probably imitative in origin; perhaps partly via Afrikaans mahem.
The South African crowned crane, Balearica regulorum, which is predominantly slate grey with a bushy crest and has a double booming call.
