Origin: A borrowing from Sanskrit. Etymons: Sanskrit mahājana, mahājan.
Etymology: < Sanskrit mahājana (also with pronunciation mahājan) ‘a merchant, a dealer, a banker or money-changer..in some places in the south of India it denotes the head of a trade or caste’ ( H. H. Wilson Gloss. Judicial & Revenue Terms (1855) 317) < mahā- great (see mickle adj.) + jana man, person.
