Etymology: < classical Latin magnum opus great labour, great work (frequently in Cicero, occasionally used of a literary work) < magnum , neuter of magnus great (see magni- comb. form) + opus work (see opus n.). Compare earlier opus magnum n.
A significant achievement; spec. a large and important work of art, music, or literature, esp. one regarded as the most important work of a particular artist.
